2o Crime Visualizations

This week I selected a website that shows different ways of expressing crime data. These statistics are based off national averages and some are expressed in very innovative ways. These examples show a glimpse what can be done in the reporting world by digital means. These visualizations would work well for news organizations as graphics in print or interactive flash presentations for multimedia. The website goes on the further say that many larger police departments; such as NYPD are using the COMPSTAT, an accountability management system that is driven by this type of data. They are also beginning to tabulate and present it in these visual terms. Many are using mapping functions to show crime distributions. There is even a updated log of mugshots from Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee and Pasco counties. The Tampa Bay Times compiles recent mugshots and statistics that are built off histograms of criminal demographics.
